Célèbre condottiere, successivement au service de Francesco Sforza, de Ferdinand d'Aragon, de Florence, du Pape et du duc de Ferrare, Federigo da Montefeltro jouissait de son vivant d'une excellente réputation, tant pour ses talents militaires que pour la gestion de sa seigneurie d'Urbino, élevée au rang de duché par Sixte IV en 1474.
