Description

LIEGE, Principauté, Rodolphe de Zaeringen (1167-1191), AR denier, avant 1174, Maastricht. Au titre de Frédéric Ier Barberousse. D/ IPE B. cour. de l''empereur à g., ten. une croix et une palme. R/ Grande clef dans un quadrilobe cantonné de lis, sous un aigle. En dessous, CLA/VIS (rétrograde). Chestret -; Dengis 372; Frère, RBN (1961), 88. 0,86g.

Rodolphe de Zaeringen participa à la troisième croisade en accompagnant le corps d'armée germanique dirigé par Frédéric Barberousse. Après avoir défait les Seldjoukides à Iconium, la progression des croisés fut brutalement stoppée suite à la mort de l'empereur, qui se noya en voulant traverser une rivière de Cilicie (juin 1190). La plus grande partie de ses troupes se dispersa et rebroussa chemin. L'évêque de Liège fit de même et revint en Allemagne. Il mourut en août 1191 près de Fribourg.
